Unbearable lightness of living 2

"Becoz love means renouncing strength"

Sabrina realised two things: First, that Franz's words were noble and just; second, that they disqualified him from her love life.

What's living in truth? For Sabrina, living in truth, lying neither to ourselves or to others, was only possible away from the public: the moment someone keeps an eye on what we do, we involuntarily make allowances for that eye, and nothing we do is truthful. Having a public, keeping a public in mind, means living in lies.

Insofar as it is possible to divide pple into categories, the surest criterion is the deep seated desires that orient them to one or other lifelong activity. Every frenchman is diff, but every actor all over the world is similar. An actor is someone who in early childhood consents to exhibit himself for the rest of his life to an annoyomous public. Without that basic consent, which has nothing to do with talent, which goes deeper than talent, no one can become an actor.

Men who pursue a multitude of women fit neatly into 2 catergories. some seek their own subjective and unchanging dream of a woman in all women. Others are prompted by a desire to possess the endless variety of the objective female world.

The obessession of the former is lyrical: what they seek in woman is themselves, their ideal. And since an ideal is by definition sth that can nvr be found, they are disappointed again and again. The disappointment that propels them from woman to woman gives their in constancy a kind of romantic excuse, so that sentimental woman are touched by their unbridled philandering.

the obession of the later is epic. the women see nothing the least bit touching in it. the man projects no subjective ideal on women, and since everything interest him, nothing can disappoint him. This inability to be disappointed has sth scandalous abt it. The obession of the epic womanizer strikes pple as lacking in redemption.
